The best place to start looking at is usually with your local city and/or county office. You can obtain this contact information quite easily by looking your local phone books or by simply doing a online search for "Down Payment Assistance Your Location". Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) has programs to help you buy your dream home sooner. Contact: NEIGHBORHOOD STABILIZATION PROGRAM HOMEOWNERSHIP LOAN PROGRAMS Under Title III of the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 (HERA), federal funds will be released by HUD to implement two new Homeownership products. MSHDA has set aside $10,000,000 of Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) funds to provide additional home ownership opportunities to eligible borrowers who meet MSHDA’s NSP income limits and sales price limit of $224,500. Borrowers must purchase an existing foreclosed or abandoned property in an "area of greatest need,” as defined by HUD. NSP 80/20

Staten Island Most programs administrators place a lien on the home whose owner received down payment assistance. The amount of the lien is reduced every year and eventually eliminated after a certain number of years. If a home owner sells his property or refinance to cash out equity while there is still a lien on the property, he will need to return part of the assistance. Such measure is in place to prevent assistance recipients taking advantage of the assistance programs by "flipping", or quickly buy and sell, properties.
